Colorwood Associations gives you a board of words and asks you to sort them into related groups. Solved groups become larger idea tiles, so the board gradually changes as you find the hidden structure.
How a board unfolds
Spot a clear link
Look for words that share a category, place, object, action, person, or phrase. Strong concrete links are usually the best starting point.
Build the next layer
When a group is solved, its category tile can connect with other solved tiles. Read the new board as a fresh puzzle.
Use a reset wisely
If a guess leaves an awkward three-word remainder, step back. The mistake is often one tempting word placed in the wrong group.
A practical solving method
- Scan the whole board. Notice proper names, foods, places, actions, and words with more than one meaning.
- Start with the strongest set. Four obvious members of one category give you a reliable foothold.
- Do not force a word. A word that fits two themes may be intended for the less obvious group.
- Re-read the remaining words. Removing one correct group often reveals the next connection.
- Use a hint in stages. Ask for a theme first, then one word, and reveal the complete group only when needed.
Common traps
- Words with two homes: keep a flexible word aside until the rest of the group is clearer.
- Proper names: a person, place, brand, or title may be the category clue rather than the answer itself.
- Near-synonyms: similar words can be decoys when the intended link is a phrase or a shared context.
- Position bias: tiles can move or reorder between versions. Trust the words you see, not their location.
When an online answer does not match
Check the exact words rather than their positions. Regional spelling, app updates, and reordered content may cause the same level number to show a different board. Read our board differences guide before assuming your puzzle is wrong.
